Robert Williams

English Department Head & Social Studies Teacher

Robert Williams

Originally from California, USA, Robert has taught in 5 countries with a combined ten years of teaching experience. He has taught in his native country, the United States, along with Korea, Costa Rica, China, and Vietnam. This is his sixth year at ISHCMC-AA. He graduated from California State University with a Bachelor's Degree in History and a teaching credential in Social Studies & English. He also graduated with a Master's Degree in History from Arizona State University. He is currently working on his PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Kentucky. In his spare time, he enjoys playing his reading, working out, traveling, and of course writing.

Charles Brew

English Teacher

Charles Brew

Charles was born in New York City, but grew up primarily in the Washington, D.C. area. His parents came from Southern California, leading to a lifelong affinity for the American West Coast.  Charles worked in a variety of fields before becoming a teacher.  He worked as a zookeeper, a utility line clearance specialist, a retail plant nursery manager, and a landscaper, among many other things. Now, he teaches 12th grade English, SUPA Academic Writing, and Model U.N. This year will be his fourth year teaching at ISHCMC-AA. He started academic teaching in 2003 at Radford University, but notes that all his previous jobs centered on training. When not working, Charles enjoys traveling, cooking and eating, and fiddling with broken mechanical things in hopes of making them not broken.

Rachel DeRozario

English Teacher

Rachel DeRozario

Rachel has enjoyed teaching and living internationally for more than 20 years. She has taught at all grade levels, as well as some university programs. She currently teaches Grade 9 and 10 English at ISHCMC - AA. She is particularly interested in promoting understanding of the adolescent mind, and identity development in Third Culture Kids. She has been involved in curriculum writing, and has been a presenter at the EARCOS Teacher’s Conference. Rachel grew up with an Australian passport but continues to be a global nomad, having lived in more than 6 countries and over 25 homes with her husband and three teenage children.

Sarah Meston

Sarah Meston

Sarah is originally from San Francisco, California, in the United States. This is her 15th year teaching English, and her career has taken her from classrooms in the U.S. to Colombia and Ecuador in South America and now Vietnam. Currently, Sarah is teaching  11th Grade English, Student Publications, and SUPA Creative Nonfiction at ISHCMC-AA. She also runs the school House System and enjoys planning events that build school spirit and a sense of community. She loves traveling and learning about different cultures and is full of gratitude for the amazing experiences she has had living on three different continents. Before teaching, Sarah had another career in journalism, as the assistant editor of a magazine. She loves writing and reading and secretly hopes to publish a novel someday.

Julie Facine

Julie Facine

Originally from Michigan, Julie has lived and worked in the United States, South Korea, Turkey, and Vietnam. Over the last twelve years, she has taught English language learners across a variety of subjects and grade levels. This is her sixth year at ISHCMC-AA. She is part of our EAL support team as a teacher passionate about helping students access curricular content through prescriptive linguistic instruction. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and playing board games.

Joel Krasso

Joel Krasso

Originally from Miami, Florida, Joel Krasso has taught in the USA, China, and Vietnam in both primary and secondary schools. In addition, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Florida Atlantic University. This is his first year teaching at ISHCMC-American Academy in the EAL department. Joel is an avid reader, travel enthusiasts, sports fanatic and is passionate about languages and cultures;  In fact, he speaks four languages!

Elizabeth Eckenrode

Elizabeth Eckenrode is a native of Dallas, Texas and loves living in Vietnam where the temperature is always hot! She has previously taught in the United States, Costa Rica, and South Korea as a classroom teacher and for the past three years as an EAL teacher. She firmly believes that each student has unique strengths and supports them in reaching their full potential - no matter their language level! Elizabeth can likely be found studying or reading at cafes all over the city in her free time.

Phillip Anderson

Originally from Texas, Phil Anderson has been teaching in Vietnam for over 9  years. He has experience teaching in both primary and secondary schools. This is Phil’s fifth year teaching at ISHCMC-AA in the EAL department. Phil enjoys reading, traveling, and acting in an occasional film. Susan Scott

Susan Scott

Susan started her teaching career in Guiyang, China, more than 30 years ago! Since then she has taught in the USA, London, and in Cairo, Egypt. This is her third year in Vietnam at ISHCMC-AA.  In 2017, she completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in India and loves sharing that practice with students. In addition, she is passionate about the power and importance of reading and will gladly read whatever you put in front of her. She especially loves when students give her book/music/film suggestions. Her goal for this year includes a daily mindfulness practice.

Ryan Shields

Ryan Shields

Hailing from western Canada, Ryan has taught in British Columbia, South Korea, Turkey, and, now, in Vietnam. This is Ryan’s fourth year at ISHCMC-AA. Ryan is the librarian at our school, and he can almost always be found working in the library space. He also teaches English Language Arts this year. Ryan's interests range from languages, text, science, technologies, and the outdoors to music, mainly the guitar, and home recording. Luis Rauth

Mathematics Department Head

Luis Rauth

Luis Rauth is one of the newest additions to ISHCMC-AA as the new Head of Mathematics. Originally from Argentina, he was raised in Australia. Luis has a Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Mathematics and Science from the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. He has over 20 years of teaching experience while inspiring students around the world. He is an experienced leader, who amongst other achievements has headed Mathematics departments in schools in Australia and China. Luis enjoys traveling and learning about new cultures, and in the past year alone, he visited over a dozen countries and three different continents. He is looking forward to exploring Vietnam and learning all about its history.

Sandra Orrego

Sandra Orrego

Originally, from Colombia. Over the last six years, she has taught Pre-algebra, Algebra 1 for middle school, and Geometry for high school. This year she is teaching Consumer Math for Seniors. Before becoming a teacher, she worked for about 15 years as an Industrial Engineer, the reason why her classes are based on real-world applications that promote critical-thinking, teamwork, communication and creativity. When she is not teaching, she enjoys outdoor activities, yoga, surfing and dancing salsa.

I am from Scotland, UK, I have taught in 3 countries and have 14 years teaching experience. I have taught in Scotland, Bahrain and Vietnam. This is my first year at ISHCMC – American Academy. I graduated from the University of Dundee with a BSc Honours Degree in Pure Mathematics. I have a Post Graduate Teaching Certificate in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Dundee. In my spare time I like to do yoga, hill walking, climbing, ice skating and reading.

Emma Berckmans

Math Teacher

Emma Berckmans

Originally from Ontario, Canada, Emma has lived in 4 different countries and has been teaching in Vietnam for 5 years. She has lived in Saudi Arabia, Honduras, Peru, and Vietnam. This is her first year at ISHCMC-American Academy. She graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor's Degree in Resource Economics. After that she went on to do graduate school at Michigan State University in Resource Economics but with a
specialization in carbon markets and agro-forestry. She has her teaching credentials in middle school and high school mathematics. Emma plays rugby for the Saigon Geckos and has tournaments all over southeast Asia. She grew up doing competitive swimming (later coaching competitive swimming) and still enjoys swimming as a primary form of exercise. Emma has also worked as a Divemaster for scuba diving and enjoys the ocean, hiking, camping, and enjoys almost any outdoor activity. She is very excited to be part of the team at ISHCMC-American Academy and is looking forward to a great year as a Sun Bear!

Originally from London, United Kingdom, Sam has ten years of teaching and leadership experience. He graduated from the University of Plymouth with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He trained to be a Teacher of Mathematics at the University of Brighton; completing this with Masters credits and has a passion for his subject. Sam is currently working on his MSc in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Portsmouth. In his spare time he enjoys drawing, painting and running half marathons.

Megan will be teaching Chemistry and Forensics in her second year at ISHCMC-AA.  She studied chemistry at Boston College and taught in Boston Public Schools for 7 years before moving to Vietnam.  In her free time, Megan enjoys traveling, hiking, SCUBA diving, adventure sports, cooking, and playing with her dog.  She is passionate about social justice and environmental sustainability.

Deepa Rani

Deepa Rani

Originally from India, Deepa has extensive experience teaching science in India, United States, Nigeria, China, and Vietnam. This will be her 6th year teaching at ISHCMC-AA. Through her experience, she has found that inquiry-based science programs, such as project-based science, significantly increases science concept learning on both lower cognitive level (recall) items and higher cognitive level (transfer and application) items. While teaching, she is a motivator, diagnostician, advisor, experimenter, researcher, collaborator, and learner. She likes hiking through the mountain, relaxing on a tropical beach, and going on boat rides with friends.

Alexandra Michaels

Alexandra Michaels

Alexandra spent her formative years in the US beginning in California, then moving to Washington, DC and Florida. She began her working career as a marine biologist in Florida before becoming a teacher.  She has taught all types of life science to middle and high schoolers, as well as Algebra and Geometry.  Before coming to Vietnam, Alexandra spent four years in Shenzhen, China teaching high school math and science. She will be teaching grades 6 and 7 STEM and Math this year. In her free time Alexandra spends time with her dog Layla and enjoys reading and doing yoga.

Originally from Limerick, Ireland, Gearoid has ten years of teaching experience having worked in England, Ireland and Vietnam . He graduated from the University of Limerick with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Biochemistry. He trained to be a Teacher of Science at the University of Suffolk and worked for 6 years in Norwick. Gearoid is very excited to join the team here at ISHCMC-AA. In his spare time he enjoys music, singing and being part of the Saigon Gaels gaelic football team.

Melissa Wiggins

Melissa is new to ISHCMC-AA this year as a STEM and math teacher for grades 7 and 8.  She has 18 years of classroom experience in her home country of the United States teaching several subject areas in elementary, middle, and high school settings.  She really enjoyed directing musicals with students in middle and high school. Melissa moved to Vietnam almost one year ago and her interests include reading, traveling, hiking, ice hockey, concerts, theater productions, listening to music, and spending time with family.

Hello! My name is Seth Laffin and am the Social Studies Department Chair. It is hard to believe, this is my eighth year at ISHCMC-AA! I have always had a great interest in Social Studies, specifically, in World History. I have a BA in History and two MAs one in American History and another in Teaching Secondary History. I am from Knoxville, Tennessee and enjoy outdoor activities and travel. At ISHCMC-AA, I teach Comparative Government, SUPA Public Affairs, and Grade 10 World History.

Hello! Justin Beghly was born and raised in Minnesota, USA. He has ten years of teaching experience in Vietnam, the US, and Korea. His teaching experience is with upper primary, high school economics, world history and US government. As an undergraduate, Justin studied economics at St. Cloud State University and has a master's degree in curriculum and instruction.  This is his first year teaching at ISHCMC -AA. Justin’s interests include spending time with his family, traveling, weight lifting, money management, and listening to Warren Buffett.

Anna Markwalter is originally from Augusta, Georgia in the United States. This is her second year at ISHCMC-AA. Before joining us last year, she taught American Literature and British Literature in Georgia Public Schools. This year she will teach Grade 7 Humanities and Grade 9 English. Anna spends her free time visiting coffee shops and reading young adult literature.

Jared Bibler

Social Studies Teacher

Jared Bibler

Jared grew up in a small town in Ohio, USA. He taught his first university class in 2005 as a graduate student at Ohio University, and since then, he has taught courses in history, international studies, politics, and humanities at universities in the US, India, and Cambodia. He also spent about three years in Guatemala doing service work and conducting field research on aspects of Guatemala’s Civil War. This is his first year at ISHCMC-AA and his first experience teaching at the high school level. He’s excited to be teaching Global Issues and Film Studies at ISHCMC-AA. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, reading, and writing, but his biggest interest is music. He loves playing, writing, performing, recording, and listening to music, as well as attending live shows.

Mammie Pasane

Mammie Pasane

Mammie is excited to join ISHCMC-AA as a Social Studies and English teacher this year. She was born in South Africa but moved to Scotland where she grew up and later attended university. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Business Studies. Upon completion she found her true passion to be in education. She moved to Vietnam six years ago and pursued her goal of becoming by successfully completing her PGCE from the University of Sunderland. She views her role as an educator as one who goes beyond the curriculum and encourages her students to foster creativity, develop character, build self-confidence and hone interpersonal skills to last a lifetime. Outside of teaching, Mammie enjoys cooking, going to yoga and going for hikes in the countryside.

Steph Lee

Steph is originally from Yorkshire in the UK. She taught Physical Education in the UK for 6 years, to all grade levels and including examination PE. She has also worked for the UK examination board Edexcel as part of their visiting moderation teams, before moving to Thailand in 2015 to begin as Head of a Gymnastics Academy at an international school in Bangkok. Steph joined ISHCMC-AA in January 2019. In her free time Steph enjoys a variety of sports, fitness and adventurous activities and is involved in developing AFL within Vietnam.

Allen Miles

Art Teacher

Allen Miles

Allen is from Buffalo, New York, which is famous for its snowfall, averaging some 3 meters every winter! He comes from a family of professional educators, and has taught at many schools in the United States and in China. At ISHCMC - American Academy since it opened in 2012, he has built up a strong Visual Arts curriculum, which added ceramics in 2017. In addition, he is Coach of the Boys High School Basketball team, which captured its first SISAC Championship in 2017, after finishing runner-up the previous 2 years. He is also proud of his Middle School Sun Bears teams, who have won 2 championships while setting a school record 27 game win streak. Besides art and sports, he enjoys reading, astronomy, and spending time with his family.

Jarrett Fuller

Jarrett Fuller

A prairie born Canadian with a concurrent bachelor’s degree in music and education from Brandon University. This will be his first year as a teacher at ISHCMC-AA. Previously he spent seven years thoroughly enjoying teaching beginning band and jazz band in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada to grade seven and eight students. He also had a brief stint in Melbourne, Australia teaching guitar to grade seven to ten students. In his spare time, he enjoys baking bread, playing in diverse musical ensembles, and watching the envy of the National Hockey League, the Winnipeg Jets.

Ryan Geers is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and is excited for his second year in Vietnam. He previously taught in the United States, South Korea, and Honduras. This is his 9th year teaching and knows it will be his best one yet! In his free time Ryan loves to cook and live an active lifestyle including going to the gym, playing basketball, scuba diving and many more activities.

Thomas Zehmeister

Thomas Zehmeister

Born and raised in the dangerous wilds of Tasmania, Australia Thomas has taught predominantly computer science in Australia, South Korea, and most recently, in Vietnam at another international school where he taught IB and IGCSE. With much experience and a deep fascination in electronics, physics, AI, robotics, and when needed, chemistry, he sought new challenges to build and run a makerspace from the ground up. He enjoys working on and teaching STEAM related activities. Thomas enjoys the physical application of theoretical knowledge and creating cross curricular opportunities. When not teaching, Thomas enjoys reading, board games, food, and a more laconic vocabulary.

Maria Bibler

Maria Bibler

Maria Bibler is the High School Counselor at ISHCMC-AA. This is her fourth year at ISHCMC-AA. She has served in various positions within international education for the last 15 years. Previously, she was a College Counselor at Singapore International School Mumbai, India. Originally from India, Maria graduated from high school in Ohio, and continued her studies there. She worked as an International Admissions and Immigration Coordinator at The Ohio State University advising students on admissions requirements as well as addressing academic and social issues. Maria is part of the Student Services Department at ISHCMC-AA.

Nguyen Hoang Anh

World Languages Department Head & Vietnamese History Teacher

Nguyen Hoang Anh

Hoang Anh joined ISHCMC - American Academy in 2014. Up to now, he has more than twelve  years of teaching experience. He hopes that his students will understand the big picture about each section in history they discuss, learn how to connect to the people of the time rather than just memorizing the dates. In addition to teaching History, he used to be a homeroom and life skills instructor. His favorite quote is “Teaching is leaving a vestige of one self in the development of another. And surely the student is a bank where you can deposit your most precious treasures.” – Eugene P. Bertin. In his free time, Hoang Anh enjoys traveling, spinning and spending time with family.

Dao Thi Yen

Yen Dao has worked in Marie Curie High School and ISHCMC - American Academy. She arrived at ISHCMC - American Academy in 2011. She tries to build an interesting syllabus that will attract students to take part through exercises, essays, and outside activities. She varies her method between group discussions and giving lectures for a given subject or elective subject. She continuously encourages her students to develop individual creativity. She also enjoys reading books, cooking, and listening to music

Huynh Thi Thanh Tam

Originally from Binh Thuan, Tam has lived, studied and worked in Ho Chi Minh City since 1996. Tam worked at Dong Do and Marie Curie High School. Since she arrived at ISHCMC - American Academy in 2010, she believes in a holistic approach to learning and wherever possible tries to encourage students to discover their own links to the world outside the classroom. When not teaching, she spends time with her children and cooking.

Nguyen Van Anh

Nguyen Van Anh is a Vietnamese native, Van Anh has devoted herself to the benefit of ISHCMC-AA ever since 2005. She has sacrificed her time taking students on charity trips in poverty areas. Her burning passion to help the community has inspired many students to join the Global Issues Network on campus. Van Anh loves to listen to the dreams of the ISHCMC - American Academy adolescents, hoping that every one of them would succeed.

Phillip YuJie Lin

Phillip has worked as a Mandarin teacher, Chinese curriculum coordinator, film producer, and lecturer in his past 10 years of educational experience. This is his second year teaching Mandarin and his first year teaching Sun Bear TV  at ISHCMC-AA. He loves teaching and learning languages. He can speak Vietnamese fluently, and is learning German now.
