Head of School

Mark Lewis

Mark Lewis is originally from Canada but has mostly worked in international schools for the past 25 years, including China, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines. As the Head of School, he is interested in developing the International School Ho Chi Minh City-American Academy into a new era. He loves sports and plays tennis and volleyball as much as he can. He holds a Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership from San Diego State University.

      Michael Tower

      Deputy Head of School

      Michael Tower

      Michael has worked in Nepal and the United States. Originally from Massachusetts, he has lived in Vietnam for five years. Michael is an experienced counselor and has worked in foster care and adoption in Connecticut, early childhood intervention in Massachusetts, and child protection in Nepal.  At ISHCMC-AA, Michael has supported the development of character education, advisory, and the focus on student well-being in school. When not as school, Michael enjoys cooking, playing with his young son, and playing tennis.

        Jennifer Pratt

        Jennifer Pratt

        Jennifer Pratt has been teaching for 19 years in international schools including 5 years ISHCMC-AA.  This year she begins a new role at ISHCMC-AA as Principal. Jennifer is originally from a small town in Ontario, Canada and before coming to Vietnam, she taught at schools in England, Kenya, Finland, and China.  Her hobbies include cooking, singing and playing gaelic football.

        Robert Wilson

        Robert Wilson

        Rob Wilson is beginning his fifth year at ISHCMC-American Academy.  He has spent the last 12 years in teaching and administrative roles in Vietnam. He is the Director of Student Services and a full-time student advocate. He enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and traveling any and everywhere.

          Diane Sisson

          Designated Safeguarding Lead & Middle School Counselor

          Diane Sisson

          Diane Sisson is the Middle School Counselor and Designated Safeguarding Lead at ISHCMC - AA, the 2019/20 school year is her third at the school.  Originally from Connecticut, Diane lived and worked in schools and mental health clinics in the United States until she moved to Vietnam in 2017. Diane holds a BA in American Language and Literature from New Hampshire College where she also worked as a Research Assistant in the Humanities Department, as well as a Masters of Social Work from the University of Connecticut.  Diane is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the United States. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, travelling, reading, spending time outdoors, cooking and listening to music.

          Robert Williams

          English Department Head & Social Studies Teacher

          Robert Williams

          Originally from California, USA, Robert has taught in 5 countries with a combined ten years of teaching experience. He has taught in his native country, the United States, along with Korea, Costa Rica, China, and Vietnam. This is his fifth year at ISHCMC-American Academy. He graduated from California State University with a Bachelor's Degree in History and a teaching credential in Social Studies & English. He also graduated with a Master's Degree in History from Arizona State University. He is currently working on his PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Kentucky. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, working out, traveling, and of course writing.

          Julie Facine

          Julie Facine

          Originally from Michigan, Julie has lived and worked in the United States, South Korea, Turkey, and Vietnam. Over the last twelve years, she has taught English language learners across a variety of subjects and grade levels. This is her fifth year at ISHCMC-American Academy. She is part of our EAL support team as a teacher passionate about helping students access curricular content through prescriptive linguistic instruction. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and playing board games.

          Elizabeth Eckenrode

          Elizabeth Eckenrode is a native of Dallas, Texas and is excited to be in Vietnam where the temperature is always hot! She has previously taught in the United States, Costa Rica, and South Korea as a classroom teacher and for the past two years as an EAL teacher. She firmly believes that each student has unique strengths and supports them in reaching their full potential - no matter their language level! Elizabeth can likely be found studying or reading at cafes all over the city in her free time.

          Susan Scott

          Susan Scott

          Susan started her teaching career in Guiyang, China, more than 30 years ago! Since then she has taught in the USA, London, and in Cairo, Egypt. This is her second year in Vietnam at ISHCMC-American Academy. In 2017, she completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in India and loves sharing that practice with students. In addition, she is passionate about the power and importance of reading and will gladly read whatever you put in front of her. She especially loves when students give her book/music/film suggestions. Her goal for this year includes a daily mindfulness practice.

          Phil Anderson

          Originally from Texas, Phil Anderson has been teaching in Vietnam for over 8 years. He has experience teaching in both primary and secondary schools. This is Phil’s fourth year teaching at ISHCMC-American Academy in the EAL department. Phil enjoys reading, traveling, and acting in an occasional film.           Joel Krasso

          Originally from Miami, Florida, Joel Krasso has taught in the USA, China, and Vietnam in both primary and secondary schools. In addition, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Florida Atlantic University. This is his first year teaching at ISHCMC-American Academy in the EAL department. Joel is an avid reader, travel enthusiasts, sports fanatic and is passionate about languages and cultures;  In fact, he speaks four languages!

          Caryn Pelletier

          Caryn Pelletier

          Caryn Pelletier is from Maine, the only state in America that has just one syllable. For the past 17 years, she has taught at international schools in Egypt, Ghana, Qatar, Italy and Tanzania prior to coming to Vietnam. She is here with her husband, Michael Haddad, and their two cats, Daisy and Pepe. Caryn holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Maine; a Maine State Teacher's Certification and has a Master's of Science in Education as a Reading Specialist and Literacy Coach.

          Charles Brew

          English Teacher

          Charles Brew

          Charles was born in New York City, but grew up primarily in the Washington, D.C. area. His parents came from Southern California, leading to a lifelong affinity for the American West Coast. Charles worked in a variety of fields before becoming a teacher. He worked as a zookeeper, a utility line clearance specialist, a retail plant nursery manager, and a landscaper, among many other things. Now, he teaches 12th grade English, SUPA Academic Writing, and Consumer Math. This year will be his third year teaching at ISHCMC-American Academy. He started academic teaching in 2003 at Radford University, but notes that all his previous jobs centered on training. When not working, Charles enjoys traveling, cooking and eating, and fiddling with broken mechanical things in hopes of making them not broken.

          Sarah Meston

          Sarah Meston

          Sarah is originally from San Francisco, California, in the United States. This is her 14th year teaching English, and her career has taken her from classrooms in the U.S. to Colombia and Ecuador in South America and now Vietnam. Currently, Sarah is teaching 10th and 11th Grade English classes at ISHCMC-American Academy. She loves traveling and learning about different cultures and is full of gratitude for the amazing experiences she has had living on three different continents. Before teaching, Sarah had another career in journalism, as the assistant editor of a magazine. She loves writing and reading and secretly hopes to publish a novel someday.

          Rachel DeRozario

          Rachel DeRozario

          Rachel has enjoyed teaching and living internationally for more than 20 years. She has taught at all grade levels, as well as some university programs. She currently teaches Grade 9 and 10 English at ISHCMC - American Academy. She is particularly interested in promoting understanding of the adolescent mind, and identity development in Third Culture Kids. She has been involved in curriculum writing, and has been a presenter at the EARCOS Teacher’s Conference. Rachel grew up with an Australian passport but continues to be a global nomad, having lived in more than 6 countries and over 25 homes with her husband and three teenage children.

          Michael Haddad

          Michael Haddad

          Michael is a Canadian citizen who is originally from Lebanon and grew up in Greece. He started out as an electrical engineer, but after a couple of years decided to pursue his true passion - teaching. He has been an educator for 27 years, of which 20 have been in international schools in Egypt, Ghana, Tanzania, Qatar and Italy. He is enjoying living and teaching in a new part of the world. Michael is here with his wife, Caryn Pelletier, and their two cats. In addition to being the Head of the Mathematics Department, Michael is the school’s certified adjunct instructor in Calculus with Syracuse University (SUPA). He enjoys travelling, movies, music, and crosswords. He is passionate about animals and Liverpool Football Club.

          Sandra Orrego

          Originally, from Colombia. Over the last five years, she has taught Pre-algebra, Algebra 1 for middle school, and Geometry for high school. This year she is teaching Consumer Math for Seniors. Before becoming a teacher, she worked for about 15 years as an Industrial Engineer, reason why her classes are based on real-world applications that promote critical-thinking, teamwork, communication and creativity. When she is not teaching, she enjoys outdoor activities, yoga, surfing and dancing salsa.

          Growing up, Andrew lived in 3 different Canadian provinces, and eventually settled in British Columbia. This will be his fourth year teaching in Vietnam, and he has taught previously in South Korea, and Brazil. His favourite activities are spending time with his 3 cats Leo, Rayne, and Pichu, as well as keeping current with the Multiverse’s greatest hockey team, the Edmonton Oilers.

          Nicole Furutani

          Nicole is from British Columbia, Canada. She has taught in Brazil, South Korea, and this is her fourth year teaching in Vietnam. She teaches Grade 7 Pre-algebra 2, STEM 7 and Grade 8 Science at ISHCMC-AA. Before being a teacher, she worked at CERN and Gemini South Observatory. She enjoys travelling, cooking, snowboarding, board games, and collecting cats.

          Deepa Rani

          Deepa Rani

          Originally from India, Deepa through her extensive science teaching and learning experience in India, United States, Nigeria, China, and Vietnam she found that Inquiry- oriented science program such as project based science support students’ significant increases in science concept learning on both lower cognitive level (recall) items and higher cognitive level (transfer and application) items.  During the act of teaching, she is a motivator, diagnostician, guide, experimenter, researcher, collaborator and learner. She likes exploring the customs and traditions of the people of various countries.

          Megan will be teaching SUPA Chemistry, Chemistry and Forensics in her first year at ISHCMC-AA.  She studied chemistry at Boston College and taught in Boston Public Schools for 7 years before moving to Vietnam.  In her free time, Megan enjoys traveling, hiking, SCUBA diving, adventure sports, cooking, and playing with her dog.

          Nora is from a small town in Ontario, Canada, however she left to Saudi Arabia when she was 10, and since then she has been a citizen of the world, Nora has 9 years of IB and AP Biology teaching experience for Secondary school students in Egypt and the UAE, She is also an IB examiner and a member of the IB school visitor team, Nora spends most of her free time SCUBA diving or daydreaming about SCUBA diving, when she is not doing that Nora enjoys cycling, travelling, playing basketball and dancing.

          Alexandra Michaels

          Alexandra Michaels

          Alexandra spent her formative years in the US beginning in California, then moving to Washington, DC and Florida. She began her working career as a marine biologist in Florida before becoming a teacher.  She has taught all types of life science to middle and high schoolers, as well as Algebra and Geometry.  Before coming to Vietnam, Alexandra spent four years in Shenzhen, China teaching high school math and science.  She will be teaching grades 6 and 7 STEM and Math this year. In her free time Alexandra spends time with her dog Layla and enjoys reading and doing yoga.

          Hello! My name is Seth Laffin and am the Social Studies Department Chair. It is hard to believe, this is my eighth year at ISHCMC-AA! I have always had a great interest in Social Studies, specifically, in World History. I have a BA in History and two MAs one in American History and another in Teaching Secondary History. I am from Knoxville, Tennessee and enjoy outdoor activities and travel. At ISHCMC-AA, I teach Comparative Government, SUPA Public Affairs, and Grade 10 World History.

          Anna Markwalter

          Anna Markwalter

          Anna Markwalter is from Augusta, Georgia in the United States. She taught American Literature and British Literature in Georgia Public Schools before joining us this year at ISHCMC-AA. This year she will teach Grade 7 Humanities and Model United Nations. Anna spends her free time reading young adult literature, watching college football games, listening to political podcasts, or traveling.

          Bill Hanrahan

          Social Studies Teacher and Technology Education Coach

          Bill Hanrahan

          Bill Hanrahan hails from New York, USA and has been teaching for 8 years. He obtained a BA in Journalism and Media from Arizona State University. He worked in magazines and radio in Phoenix, Arizona and for the History Channel television network in New York City.  Bill later obtained his Master of Education from Queens College, New York City.  He taught in the United States, China and Vietnam. He recently finished his educational leadership program with The College of New Jersey to become a principal.  Something interesting about Bill is that he has had 22 different jobs throughout his life.

          Jeffrey Dickau

          Jeffrey Dickau

          Originally from the home of one of America’s most popular sports channels, ESPN, Jeff has been working in the field of education for over 15 years. In addition to working as an educator in secondary schools and universities, he also has coached basketball, soccer/football, and tennis. Prior to his professional career, Jeff spent his summers working in an amusement park where he made fried dough, operated a trolley, as well as guessed the age and weight of people visiting the park. He currently is teaching ninth-grade World History and an eleventh and twelfth-grade Film Studies course. Jeff enjoys exploring new places, listening to lectures, and visiting local barbershops in his free time.

          Kelly Rose Kirby

          Kelly Rose Kirby

          “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams,” Eleanor Roosevelt notably said.  After spending a year working with AmeriCorps in Los Angeles and seeing firsthand the power dedicated educators had to inspire students to achieve their dreams, Kelly earned her Masters in Teaching degree with a focus on middle school English and social studies, completing her student teaching in Ecuador.  She then taught middle school English in both rural Mississippi, with Teach for America, and Shanghai.  As a 6th grade humanities and 8th grade social studies teacher at ISHCMC-AA,  Kelly hopes to inspire students to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

          Suim Shin

          Suim is originally from Seoul, Korea and has lived and worked in Korea, USA, Myanmar, Mongolia and Vietnam. This is her 14th year teaching and 7th year working at ISHCMC-American Academy. She has taught Physical Education/Health from age 4 to high school and has also coached sports teams such as tennis, badminton, table tennis and soccer. She enjoys traveling, practicing yoga and playing tennis but most of all spending quality time with her loved ones.

          Steph Lee

          Steph is originally from Yorkshire in the UK. She taught Physical Education in the UK for 6 years, to all grade levels and including examination PE. She has also worked for the UK examination board Edexcel as part of their visiting moderation teams, before moving to Thailand in 2015 to begin as Head of a Gymnastics Academy at an international school in Bangkok. Steph joined ISHCMC-American Academy in January 2019. In her free time Steph enjoys a variety of sports, fitness and adventurous activities and is involved in developing AFL within Vietnam.

          Allen Miles

          Art Teacher

          Allen Miles

          Allen is from Buffalo, New York, which is famous for its snowfall, averaging some 3 meters every winter! He comes from a family of professional educators, and has taught at many schools in the United States and in China. At ISHCMC-American Academy since it opened in 2012, he has built up a strong Visual Arts curriculum, which added ceramics in 2017. In addition, he is Coach of the Boys High School Basketball team, which captured its first SISAC Championship in 2017, after finishing runner-up the previous 2 years.           Scott Rogal

          Scott Rogal

          Scott Rogal has taught Instrumental Music in Canada, Hong Kong and Vietnam. His bands have been acknowledged for their high quality, winning many National and International awards. Scott has also composed commissions for several musical groups; his last work was composed for the International Honor Band in Myanmar. Scott teaches and conducts the ISHCMC-American Academy Band program, which grew from 27 students to 85 accomplished musicians since it started. He is still composing, studying the dan bau, and playing tenor sax with the Latin/Reggae Band “Bad Neighbours”.

          Thomas Zehmeister

          Thomas Zehmeister

          Born and raised in the dangerous wilds of Tasmania, Australia Thomas has taught predominantly computer science in Australia, South Korea, and most recently, in Vietnam at the British International School where he taught IB and IGCSE. With much experience and a deep fascination in electronics, physics, AI, robotics, and when needed, chemistry, he sought new challenges to build and run a makerspace from the ground up. He enjoys working on and teaching STEAM related activities. Thomas enjoys the physical application of theoretical knowledge and creating cross curricular opportunities. When not teaching, Thomas enjoys reading, board games, food, and a more laconic vocabulary.

          Ryan Geers is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and is excited for his first year in Vietnam. He previously taught in the United States, South Korea, and Honduras. This is his 8th year teaching and knows it will be his best one yet! In his free time Ryan loves to cook and live an active lifestyle including going to the gym, playing basketball, scuba diving and many more activities.

          Hailing from western Canada, Ryan has taught in British Columbia, South Korea, Turkey, and, now, in Vietnam. Ryan is the librarian at our school, and he can almost always be found working in the library space. He also teaches our Information literacy course though, so he is sometimes teaching in other rooms. Ryan's interests range from languages, text, science, technologies, and the outdoors to music, mainly the guitar, and home recording.           Maria Bibler

          Maria Bibler

          Maria Bibler is the High School Counselor at ISHCMC-American Academy. This is her third year at ISHCMC-American Academy. She has served in various positions within international education for the last 15 years. Previously, she was a College Counselor at Singapore International School Mumbai, India. Originally from India, Maria graduated from high school in Ohio, and continued her studies there. She worked as an International Admissions and Immigration Coordinator at The Ohio State University advising students on admissions requirements as well as addressing academic and social issues. Maria is part of the Student Services Department at ISHCMC-American Academy.

          Yen Dao has worked in Marie Curie High School and ISHCMC - American Academy. She arrived at ISHCMC - American Academy in 2011. She tries to build an interesting syllabus that will attract students to take part through exercises, essays and outside activities. She varies her method between group discussions and giving lectures for a given subject or elective subject. She continuously encourages her student to develop individual creativity. She also enjoys reading books, cooking and listening to music.

          Originally from Binh Thuan, Tam has lived, studied and worked in Ho Chi Minh City since 1996. Tam worked at Dong Do and Marie Curie High School. Since she arrived at ISHCMC - American Academy in 2010, she believes in a holistic approach to learning and wherever possible tries to encourage students to discover their own links to the world outside the classroom. When not teaching, she spends time with her children and cooking.

          Nguyen Hoang Anh

          Hoang Anh joined ISHCMC - American Academy in 2014. Up to now, he has more than ten years of teaching experience. He hopes that his students will understand the big picture about each section in history they discuss, learn how to connect to the people of the time rather than just memorizing the dates. In addition to teaching History, he used to be a homeroom and life skills instructor. His favorite quote is “Teaching is leaving a vestige of one self in the development of another. And surely the student is a bank where you can deposit your most precious treasures.” – Eugene P. Bertin. In his free time, Hoang Anh enjoys traveling, spinning and spending time with family.

She has sacrificed her time taking students on charity trips in poverty areas. Her burning passion to help the community has inspired many students to join the Global Issues Network on campus. Van Anh loves to listen to the dreams of the ISHCMC - American Academy adolescents, hoping that every one of them would succeed.

          Phillip Lin Yujie is a native Mandarin speaker. He's been teaching the Chinese language for 7+ years. He worked as the curriculum coordinator and head of Chinese study in an international school. He was also a lecturer who taught scriptwriting and film production in a university. He has professional skills in film production, which helps him make the video lectures for students. He also loves learning language and now he can speak Cantonese and Vietnamese fluently.
