Why the English language offers a world full of opportunity

Learning any new language is always an exciting and beneficial thing to do. Mastering an additional language to your own native tongue will open up new horizons and enhance your life in numerous ways. A second language can be a verbal window to a new culture, and new friends; and it will encourage you to listen more and help activate your brain in a positive way.

Of course trying to learn a new language can be a difficult and frustrating experience – it’s not normally a simple task to undertake. However the rewards of being able to proficiently or fluently speak in a different language will heavily outweigh any downsides faced during the learning process.

Embracing a new language will always be worth the effort, and this is no more so true than when learning English. English is spoken extensively across the world and throughout international academic institutions and corporations. There are reportedly 67 nations that have English as their primary language and an additional 27 countries where English is spoken as a secondary ‘official’ language.

The advantages to be gained from being able to speak English exist in so many areas of life, from higher education to work, through to travel and friendships – below are seven reasons why.

“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”

Frank Smith

7 reasons why learning English can be an advantage if life

  1. Learn a global language

  1. Open your employment horizons

Did you know that English is the common language spoken within many work industries and multinational corporations? Understanding the English language is an absolute asset if you want to gain employment in many professions including tourism, science, media, technology, computers and finance.

International business is often conducted using English due to its widespread use across so many countries in the world including US, Canada and the United Kingdom.

  1. Choose your favourite university anywhere in the world!

There are literally thousands of universities and colleges around the world that offer students an incredible choice of courses in English. If you can speak the English language your horizons for a higher education become broader, brighter and more interesting.

  1. The first language of the internet

As the internet was invented by an English computer scientist, Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, it’s no surprise that English remains an important language in the online world, with reportedly more than half of its content written in its creators native language.

  1. Expand the joy of reading

You can appreciate English literature in its original form in paper or digital form without the slight dissonance of a translation into another language.

  1. A common love of popular culture

Although language should never be a restriction to sharing a love of art and music, it is certainly true that you can avoid the restrictions of subtitles when watching English centric films and tv if you know the lingo!

  1. Travel the world and make new friends

If you can pack the ability to speak English in your rucksack alongside your passport, sleeping bag and suncream, you are guaranteed an easy transit in many countries and a faster way to make friends.
